Common paid ads FAQs answered by experts

What are retargeting ads, and how do they work?

Retargeting ads are paid ads shown to people who already interacted with your business, such as visiting your website, viewing a service page, watching a video, clicking a social ad, or starting a form without finishing it.

Retargeting ads work because most people do not call, book, or buy the first time they see you. A homeowner may compare three pest control companies. A patient may read about dental implants, leave, then ask a spouse later. A law firm lead may visit after hours but not submit a form. Retargeting gives you a second chance to stay visible while that person is still deciding.

The basic setup is simple: an ad platform records a visitor or engagement, adds that person to an audience, then shows ads to that audience later on Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, or display placements. The tracking usually comes from tags such as Google tag, Google Ads remarketing tag, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, GA4 audiences, or customer lists uploaded from your CRM.

Good retargeting is not the same as following everyone with the same ad forever. We segment audiences by intent. Someone who read one blog post should see a softer message. Someone who visited a pricing page, booking page, or high-value service page can see a stronger call to action.

Good example: A lawn care company shows one ad to visitors who viewed “weekly lawn mowing in Orlando” and another ad to visitors who viewed “commercial landscape maintenance.” Each ad points to a matching landing page with reviews, photos, service area details, and a simple quote form.

Bad example: The same company shows a generic “We do lawn care” ad to every visitor for 180 days, including people who already became customers, bounced from a blog post, or visited the careers page.

Retargeting matters most when your website traffic already has some quality. If paid search, SEO, social, or UGC ads bring the right people to the site, retargeting can improve conversion rate, reduce wasted spend, and keep your brand in the decision set. If the original traffic is poor, retargeting just repeats the waste.

Before running retargeting, check these basics:

  • Your conversion tracking records calls, forms, bookings, purchases, and qualified leads.
  • Your privacy policy explains tracking, cookies, and advertising use.
  • Your audiences exclude existing customers when the offer is only for new leads.
  • Your ads match the service, location, and stage of the buyer.
  • Your landing pages load fast, explain the offer, show proof, and make the next step easy.

For local service businesses, we usually start with simple audiences: all site visitors in the last 30 days, high-intent service page visitors in the last 60 days, and form or booking abandoners in the last 14 days. Then we test message angles, such as reviews, financing, same-day availability, before-and-after proof, seasonal reminders, or a stronger offer.

Watch frequency, cost per lead, lead quality, conversion rate, and assisted conversions in Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, GA4, and your CRM. High impressions with few leads usually means the audience is too broad, the offer is weak, or the landing page does not answer the buyer’s concern.

If your paid ads already drive traffic but too many visitors leave without calling or filling out a form, retargeting can be a smart part of our PPC services. If you need better social creative for warmer audiences, our UGC content can help turn proof, demos, and customer-style videos into ads people actually watch.
